FOMA
FOMA is a 6 piece band based out of York University which focuses on covering modern jazz and playing original material. It aims to preserve the improvisational spirit of jazz music, while drawing influence from hip-hop and neo-soul. The sextet which features Vonne Aguda (trombone), Chris Anderson-Lundy (saxophone), David Cruz (guitar), Cole Méndez (keyboards), William Dietrich (bass), and Jon Catanus (drums) explores unexpected melodies, danceable rhythms, and exciting solos. The members of the group have each been individually involved in different areas of Toronto’s music scene: from straight-ahead jazz to indie pop, progressive rock, hip-hop and folk. These diverse experiences enable them to craft FOMA’s unique sound.
The group is heavily influenced by Toronto musicians such as Kelly Jefferson, Barry Elmes, Kirk MacDonald, Lorne Lofsky, Ernesto Cervini, Reg Schwager, Artie Roth and Steve Wallace. Other sources of inspiration and creativity include Kamasi Washington, D’Angelo, Kendrick Lamar, Hiatus Kaiyote and Snarky Puppy.
