Marigold officially took its current name and identity in the summer of 2019. Previous to Marigold the band took many forms, such as Funk The System, Castle Funk, and Babysitter’s Boyfriend, the band played around Toronto at different venues like the Rockpile, Garrison, Supermarket and more. In the summer of 2019, the band went for a rebrand, to create a new identity and move towards a new sound.
The band played a few gigs and wrote some material in this iteration, but the Covid lockdown forced the band into a different role. Instead of focusing on performing, efforts were directed toward new compositions. Since then, the band has grown, adding new members, and also creating its own unique voice of jazz fusion. Blending eclectic influences such as Pat Metheny, Roy Hargrove, Domi and JD Beck, Steely Dan, Weather Report and more the band developed its own repertoire of original material.
Once the lockdowns were lifted, the band brought their new tunes onto the stage. Performing at venues across the city, and using social media, the band has built a dedicated fan base. The band has since secured a residency at Bar Cathedral and is looking to record their material and circulate it online to further grow their audience.
